This project in the heavily wooded area of Ulster County, The Town of Shandaken, poses several issues affecting construction. This area in addition to the heavily wooded areas contains an active waterway and heavy vehicular traffic on Rt 28. To alleviate the traffic problem and keep the roadway open the required new roadway and bridge are being constructed south of the existing bridge. This allows the existing roadway and bridge to remain open to traffic. Once the new bridge and road are completed traffic will be shifted to the new road allowing demolition of the old bridge and closing of the roadway. In total 2 bridges are to be replaced, a railroad bridge over abandoned railroad tracks and the Route 28 bridge over Ashokan Creek. A connector to the Ashokan Rail Trail will also be constructed as well as a new Trailhead parking area. This project requires heavy third-party coordination with Verizon and Central Hudson Gas and Electric.
